150 new East Sussex jobs through a local charity
« Thread Started on Aug 12, 2009, 4:16am »

I was pleased to hear of yet more jobs in Sussex being created and this time through a local charity. Hastings Furniture Company (HFC) reuses furniture and distributes it to low income families. The company usually has 20 volunteers and 10 fully paid staff. With help from the government’s future jobs fund they can help create an extra 150 jobs!!

The jobs are again aimed at those who are 18-24. I feel like my tune is starting to change with time. I understand that youngsters are most at risk in this recession with little workplace experience to bring with them on their CV however a good proportion of job articles I read are all aimed at the young.

The media has been quite the bringer of doom and gloom when it comes to graduate recruitment - always reporting how the numbers of jobs available are dropping and companies aren't recruiting. Though I don't think the picture is as bad as it is painted... The media has failed to mention how smaller companies are still eagerly wanting graduates and other youngsters on board. It is irrational to think that there are no jobs out there for youngsters.

Do you think all these media reports could have spurred the government on a little too far? I hear of a lot of projects and job creations where the jobs are aimed specifically at 18-24 year olds. While we need to help them... are we forgetting every one else who are also out of a job? For instance older people can still face discrimination? It is great that we are creating so many jobs but only a small proportion of the UK can apply for them…

I like two think about this recycling old furniture - very green and more jobs being created! A bonus!!!!!

150 new jobs however is great news! I like the idea of this company I must say! Do they sell it or give it away then?

I see what your saying about the governments incentives currently being aimed at younger candidates and think you ar right - it is slightly unfair! I mean yes it is brilliant that they are helping the younger generations - but what about the olde rgenerations? They have the opposite problem - not that they don't have anough experince but more that they not a desirable age or are over experienced!

The media hype always seems to affect everyone in ways it shouldnt doesnt it? Not just the governement but society as a whole in my opinion! Don't you agree?

I am really hearing two sides to directly helping the younger generation. Some worry that if the government do not act quickly there will be a "lost generation" of youngsters. However are we neglecting the rest of the UK??
I wonder if unemployed youths make up a large portion of those without jobs? If a large percentage were teenagers then yes I could understand why they are focusing. But I bet older people are equally contributing to the figures.

I love your point about the media affecting communities!! They actually have a lot of influence and power over people's thoughts and opinions so you would think they would be a bit more careful with what they say! Can you really 100% say that what the media tells us is the whole story and an accurate version?? I believe a lot of what the media say.. but for all I know it could just be made up of exaggerations and chinese whispers..

I read today that youth unemployment is at 19% percent today so I dont know if that is the proportion of the unemployed or if it is the proportion of youngsters that are unemployed?

Most of what the media reports is exageratted in some way in my opinion - I mean they do what they have to in order to sell papers don't they!

I agree with you about the government needing to get it together and look at the older as well as younger generations! I mean people need jobs of all ages right now! Its not right to help just one section of society is it?
