Are Sussex lecturers going to lose their jobs?
« Thread Started on Aug 4, 2009, 9:21am »

Everyone is being squeezed in this recession there is no doubt about it. Most sectors have really been whittled down however I thought that education was a recession proof job? Education is an ongoing service that surely cannot be decreased any further?

Apparently universities are thinking of cutting back on their lecturers in order to cut back on costs.

Meaning many West Sussex jobs could go from this alone! Madness!

What confuses me is that this year, more students then ever are going to university. That means more tuition fees and more accommodation fees. Then there is money from washing machines, on campus shops etc – so why do they suddenly feel the need to cut back on lecturers?

It seems like a lot of youths are turning to university as ‘something to do’ and to avoid the terrible jobs market. Once upon a time university used to be something of great achievement – but now everyone is encouraged to go. You have courses in all sorts (and a lot is not relevant to the job market). Do you think graduate standards could be dropping? Is a degree worth as much as it once was when looking for jobs?

fizzlwe you have hit a good subject here and I am sure there will be many different view points on this subject!

It seems like there is no such thing as recession proof and to be honest I think half the cut backs that are being made are purely to save the companies in questions money rather than are actually needed! Everyone is streamlining everything at the moment 'just in case'.

Like you I believe Edication is an area where there should not be any cut backs whatsoever! How are people supposed to get a good standard of Education with all these cut backs! And yes your right with so may more poeple going to uni how can these cut backs be justified?

As for greaduate standards - don't get me started haha!

You made a really good point - people are cutting back just in case. On another forum I read that Shell have made billions of profit this year (the figures were down from last year but they were still in the billion bracket) but they were still considering job cuts. I suppose companies just don't know what is going to happen next and it is safe to have some money in the bank.

Tuition fees rise every year in order to support the university - to pay the lecturers, to fun research etc. but I am not sure we really see an improvement on the services offered? For example in 2006 the fees trebeled and I don't think the quality of education, or the services improved to the new students. Did you go to uni Nikki? Did any of your facilities improve for what you paid?

I went to Uni yes and to be honest I didnt see any great improvements anywhere! But I suppose they always have some excuse well prepared hehe!

I honestly do think that some companies are being over cautious and making job cuts just in case and your example of Shell here is the perfect example! It shws exactly what I thought! They make a profit and still think they have to make cuts as x may happen or whatever! How about cut back on big bonuses instead! That would sure save them some money wouldnt it?
